Note: For some reason, The Medicine appears to be unavailable for purchase as of the date of this review.  Possibly this is related to JMM’s recent signing by Integrity Music.  We can only hope that Integrity re-releases this album soon.   So, if you see a copy in your local music store – buy it!

SYNOPSIS
KLAMPERT: For years I have heard that the Church should be on the cutting edge of music and not trailing behind. Sadly for years we have seen the Church rehash what others have done. Then I heard Jesus Culture sing “How He Loves” and I tracked it down to John Mark McMillan, the writer, and I was floored. I could not believe my ears. It was worship with lyrics that were not typical and very poetic.

So I decided to pick up this CD to see if the rest of his music was as good and what I got was candy for the ears. This CD is brilliant and John deserves way more credit as a song writer than just a guy that others are covering.

MAHONEY: Like many people, my introduction to John Mark McMillan came through the various versions of his seminal hit “How He Loves.”  So I had no idea what to expect when I listened to this album.  What you get here is an advanced course in songwriting.  These songs resonate, they cut through and they bring truth to the heart.  John is a classic troubador/songwriter, it shows through here.
VANCE: Before I had this album, the only thing I knew of John Mark McMillan was the Keith-Green-esque video on YouTube of How He Loves.  So, when I first listened to The Medicine, it was a bit of a surprise.  To be honest, I didn’t know what to make of it on the first few listens.  Now I absolutely love it.This is classic singer songwriter material.  I hope this doesn’t insult John, but it sounds similar to some of Bruce Springteen’s latest, or Bob Dylan.  I love the use of language, the imagery the songs paint.  The songs are deep and will grow on you.
BOTTOM LINE
KLAMPERT: This is a MUST HAVE CD. the songs are amazing and the lyrics are so well constructed that it’s gripping. Rating: ★★★★½
MAHONEY: . I have a feeling John’s career is just taking off.  Get in on it.  Rating: ★★★★½
VANCE: I absolutely love it! Rating: ★★★★★

SONGS FOR CHURCH
KLAMPERT:

  • Skeleton Bones
  • Dress Us Up

These are a bit out of the box for church, but I think they could be used in certain circumstances. As a matter of fact I am using Dress us Up for a men’s retreat soon.

MAHONEY:

I don’t think I’d personally try any of these in church, but they are sure purdy to listen to!

VANCE: For me, there’s not a song on here I would try at church.  In saying that, the chorus from “Skeleton Bones” is amazing and could be inserted into a worship set.
